June 15, 2003 Today is Father's Day. A month ago we celebrated Mother's Day and the men in our family got together and cooked out. All the mother's, grandmothers and great aunts with no family to mention were there. It was a good time, a time of joy of motherhood and a way of showing the women in our family we care. Today is Father's Day. I have four children all of who I am close too. But today, my oldest daughter stopped by in a hurry to get to the Father's Day Celebration for her stepfather. It's ok, he's a nice guy and for the past 20 years been a part of my two oldest childrens lives. He and their mother were a part of the Mother's Day Celebration. My oldest son lives in NYC and I think he tried to call. The other two? Well one is in college and I am sure she has homework to do. The other in high school went to the lake with his girlfriend and her family. He said he would be back early but it's almost bedtime and I haven't heard from him. I did stop bye to visit my stepfather. For a gift, I returned tools I borrowed in the past and made him a CD of music from his past. My father is deceased. He has been gone for nearly 20 years but I miss him and I am so glad that on his last Father's Day I spent the day with him helping him around the house. If something happens to me before the next Father's Day, I wish for my children that they got here, called or at leasted wished me a happy Father's Day. I know they love me and know they would have done it if they only had the time. I just hope they never have too look back and wish they had taken the time to be here on this one day. It would have meant a lot to me, but I'm afraid their absence could be something they regret someday. Regardless, I love them and will always do so. That's why we do Mother's Day, because we love the kids. a dad! ------------ About the author: Jeff D. Riley is a second generation Italian American who lives in Texas.
