Living The Life Of Holly

Doing No Wrong
June 25, 2003

“Were you waiting for me to call?” Ralph asked into the phone.

“Nope. I’m waiting for the neurologist to call.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. JetBlue needs another letter.” I sighed.

“Why do they need another one?”

“Not sure, think he must have written those other letters in invisible ink.”

“Why do they need another one?” He asked again.

“Maybe they are comparing his signature for fraud?”

“WHY DO THEY NEED ANOTHER ONE?”

“Good question. I can see why you are asking. It doesn’t make much sense, does it? It confuses even me.”

“Holly. Why?”

They don’t believe him when he says that I’m healthy enough to fly.” I said, quietly.

“They said that?”

“Over and over again.”

“Let’s go for a bike ride.” He said. “You can take you cell. He has that number, doesn’t he?”

“He has it, but I think that I would rather wait here for his call.”

“Nope. You’re not going to sit home all day waiting for the phone to ring.”

We went down the bike path which rides below Speer Boulevard along the creek. There were few people out so we had the path to ourselves. I wasn’t in much of a rush, which wasn’t suiting the pace of my best friend.

“Go faster.” He insisted.

“No. This isn’t a race.”

“It IS a race, and you’re losing.”

“Ok. You win. Now you go and pedal at your speed, and I’ll pedal at my speed, ok?”

We cycled over to Washington Park and did several loops around the lakes. A woman was jogging and although Ralph and I were cycling right next to each other, she seemed to take an instant dislike to him.

“Hey. You. Ride on the other side.” She yelled.

Ralph turned to me. “Was she yelling at me?”

“I think she was.” I laughed.

“Why? What was I doing wrong?”

“Don’t know. Go and ask her.”

“Can’t believe she yelled like that.” He mumbled.

We kept riding. He couldn’t let it go. “Look at that girl. She is riding over here too. Maybe someone should go and yell at her. Look at that guy. And that kid. All of those people are riding over here. Even you’re riding over here. Why did she yell at me? I’m not doing anything wrong.”

“Don’t know.” I laughed. “Let’s see if we can go back the other way and pass her. That way you can ask her all the questions you have on your mind.”

“I don’t get it.” He grumbled.

“Check the phone.” I said.

He checked. I hadn’t missed any calls. Too bad. I was hoping that the doctor would call today. JetBlue had decided that if I didn’t have another letter in by Friday that I would be fired. I had faxed the information he needed, but I hoped that he would call.

“Maybe you will get fired.” He said. “There’s no way the doctor can write another letter in three days.”

“I know. But maybe he can.”

“You need to call someone else at jetBlue and explain what is going on. I think that someone small in the company is making big mistakes.”

“I got a letter from the director of human resources. She said that I need to get the letter, or walk. She didn’t even put her phone number on the paper.”

We were stopped at a red light. He turned to me. “Are you sure you didn’t mess this up somehow? They didn’t send you some paperwork that you missed dealing with?”

“You have seen all my mail. Did you see anything from the company?”

“No.”

“Don’t worry. If I run out of money, I can come and live with you.”

“Yeah.” He said. “That’s what I’m afraid of.”

“Afraid?” I asked. “Think of it as a golden opportunity to have a little extra Holly in your life.”

“Yeah.” He said. “That’s what I’m afraid of.”

“Afraid? Don’t worry. We’ll just think of it as a cheap therapy to help you deal with your fears.”
