Martha Stewart is a Scapegoat
June 5, 2002

The latest high profile made for TV criminal case is Martha Stewart. Stewart is a multi billionaire, or at least she was prior to the infamous sale of 4,000 shares on Imclone stock. The sale saved her $45,000. That’s peanuts for a billionaire. Far from a hardcore insider trade.

The truth is most people with even a couple hundred dollars in a stock would probably sell if their stock broker or someone they really trusted told them to bail. Right or wrong that’s the way it is. $45,000 to Martha Stewart is like change to most people. This is assuming she is even guilty. I’m not saying laws shouldn’t be followed. I just think it could have been handled rationally. Of course, that means prosecutors wouldn’t be able to net a really big fish. If she were an unknown person it probably would have been handled much differently. Aren’t the people who leak that kind of insider information the real culprits?

It's ironic that Stewart lashed out at Republicans when this all started. I don’t know if she is a liberal or if she thought that the liberals and liberal media would come to her side if she blamed Republicans for her problems. If she was looking for that kind of help, it was a miscalculation. Martha didn’t take into consideration that the liberals do not like what she represents. She is an incredibly successful person. A successful woman who made it through smarts and hard work. She is an easy target in a lynch mob society. She is rich and tough. Let’s kick her when she’s down. Left-wingers won’t defend someone like that. If you are a woman and you kill your kids, then they can stick up for you. You must simply have a disorder and we should have compassion on you. Or you need to be named Hillary Clinton and make lots of money on a deal where others do the time and you get a pass.

I’m not defending guilty behavior. Martha Stewart has already lost a fortune and been dragged through the media. I think that punishment more than fits the crimes she is accused of. There are far worse criminals out there. How much money is this case costing the taxpayer? The judicial system is in need of some serious reforms. There are too many power hungry prosecutors who don’t care whether they convict the guilty or the innocent. Too many radical judges who legislate from the bench and slap the real criminals on the wrist. But I’ll save that for a future column.
