Gene LaBargeFeb 27, 2002 Phil Donahue’s MSNBC talk show had the plug pulled Monday. The show lasted 6 months. He is now complaining that he didn’t have enough time to succeed. Despite his complaints, the show was a predictable failure. Donahue was doomed from the beginning. Not because of his age, but because people now know what he is about. Back in his day, Donahue was king. Just like Oprah is queen. The difference is that his liberal views were hidden behind the guise of host objectivity. He was a liberal, but used the subliminal approach. He was clever and many didn’t even realize what an idealist he was. It’s kind of like how there are still some who are not aware of the liberal slant of the mainstream media. Then comes the “political talk show host” Donahue. Sheep’s clothing removed, he didn’t stand a chance. The Oprah crowd is not interested in a political talk show. That leaves Phil with nothing but his antiquated opinions. Liberals can only compete when they are disguised as impartial. That is true of TV and radio. Who has given Rush Limbaugh a run for his money? Nobody. The only ones in the ballpark are conservatives. Why? Lies and name calling only go so far. Liberals only have complaints. They see everything that is wrong, but rarely offer a solution. Donahue has been getting less than 20% of Bill O’Reilly’s audience. I guess the anti-war crowd must be smaller than we are led to believe. How can he complain that he was let go? He had twice as much time as most conservatives would have gotten with those numbers. He can’t say MSNBC didn’t promote the show. I heard the commercials so often that I watched a couple different times myself. I couldn’t watch for long, though. I am sure we will see many more efforts at getting a liberal political talk show host to the top. Right now the closest thing they have is Larry King. However, that falls under the category of subliminal liberal. Casual viewers can be fooled. Besides, Larry King is a softball show. Perhaps Donahue can go back to daytime and grab away some of the naïve Oprah crowd. Maybe he could become an unbiased network news anchor. After all, there is a sucker born every minute. ------------ Gene LaBarge is an aspiring political commentator and publisher of several websites including abfnews.com.
