Gene LaBargeDec 5, 2002 Henry Kissinger has been appointed by President Bush to head a bipartisan commission of inquiry into the attacks on 9/11. It is his job to identify the failures of intelligence leading up to the attacks. Of course, as with anyone Bush appoints to anything, he has come under personal attacks. My question is, who better than Kissinger? As with anyone, I may not agree with everything someone does or says all the time. That being said, Kissinger’s credentials are nothing short of remarkable. He is a Washington insider who knows all the intelligence services. He served as the president’s National Security Advisor and then Secretary of State (Nixon and Ford). Can there be a more important figure in the history of US diplomacy? As a youth he came to the United States with his family, fleeing Nazi tyranny. He served in the Army during World War II. He then went to Harvard and received his doctorate in political science. Kissinger has written many books and articles on United States foreign policy and international affairs. He has won countless awards including the Nobel Peace Prize. His list of accomplishments is far too great for me to list. Kissinger has been called “America’s most brilliant and resourceful modern statesman.” I cannot argue with that. Kissinger said the day after the 9/11 attacks that “we should henceforth show more sympathy for people who are daily exposed to this kind of attack, whom we keep telling to be very measured in their individual responses”. This may seem obvious to most people, but Kissinger may have been the first prominent figure to publicly say this. Unfortunately, there are some who still don’t get it. This inquiry should not be a witch-hunt. It needs to be something that can lead to improving the defense of our country. It is good to see a brilliant man like Henry Kissinger given an opportunity to contribute to such an endeavor.
