Gene LaBargeOct 24, 2002 Remember when President Bush labeled North Korea as part of the Axis of Evil? Many thought this declaration was overzealous. Now, North Korea has admitted that it is developing nuclear weapons. This is information that U.S. intelligence officials have known all along. This confession was not voluntary. It was due to evidence gathered against them. Under a 1994 agreement with the United States, North Korea agreed to freeze nuclear weapons production. The U.S. demands a complete dismantling of the nuclear weapons program. North Korea has been threatening South Korea for ages. They have terrorist ties and have been connected to trafficking, counterfeiting and human rights violations. They have been working on their missile system for years and are now believed to be capable of reaching the U.S. Of course, Bill Clinton had warning that North Korea could not be trusted. Once again they were not dealt with before becoming a danger to the world. In fact, they have become the largest recipient of U.S. foreign aid in Asia. The Clinton administration was warned in at least 2 government reports that they were a gathering threat. In 1998 there was the State Department of Human Rights Report. In 1999 there was the North Korea Advisory Group, which consisted of 9 senior members of Congress. Iraq may be the next stop in the war on terror. They won’t be the last. North Korea should pay close attention to the fate of Iraq and Afghanistan. If they don’t make some major changes, they will be dealt with. One way or another. ------------ Gene LaBarge is an aspiring political commentator and publisher of several websites including abfnews.com.
