Jimmy Carter Should Refuse Nobel Peace Prize
Oct 17, 2002

Former President Jimmy Carter has won the Nobel Peace Prize. He should do the noble thing and refuse it.

The awards committee said the award was a criticism of current U.S. policy. So much for winning the award on your own merits. This is an insult to Carter as well as exposing what the award has been reduced to. Anti-American propaganda. Carter was selected because he has spoke out numerous times against the war on terror and the Bush Administration.

It could easily be argued that Carter has done more to harm peace during his years of public service than create peace. His ideological views have not helped any. There were the pardons granted to Americans who fled to Canada to avoid being drafted for the Vietnam War. Carter and his CIA Director crumbled the CIA spy corps. Carter’s presidency was indeed one of the worst in history. His failure to negotiate the release of hostages in the Iran hostage crisis resulted in 8 U.S. Marines being killed. Carter’s was too yielding towards the USSR, who eventually invaded Afghanistan. Most recently, the courting of Fidel Castro. Perhaps he should have stayed in Cuba a little longer. He could have done for them what he did for the U.S. during his presidency.

Carter’s failures with the economy were monumental. He had severely criticized former President Ford for his failure to control inflation and unemployment. Carter made things much worse. Double-digit inflation and rising unemployment were the result. Of course, there were the long gas-lines and power rationing.

There was a time when the Nobel Peace Prize meant something. Those days are long gone. Last year’s winners were the United Nations and Kofi Anann. In 1994 it was terrorist Yasser Arafat. In 1990 Mikail Gorbachev was the winner. Gorby should have done the right thing and given it to Ronald Reagan. He didn’t. Now Jimmy Carter has a chance to finally be a man and refuse the award. He won’t. He is not part of the solution; he is part of the problem.
