Apr 14, 2004 I remember seeing a movie several years back, "The Sixth Sense," which has real twist at the end that changes the nature of everything which seemingly happened before it. While watching this movie I admit I had no clue whatsoever as to what was actually going on and where it was leading. After seeing the ending, however, I started thinking back on the movie. If I could have kicked myself, I would have as the plot was littered with clues as to where the movie was heading. Putting these "clues" all together after the fact was easy, like child's play. The events of September 11, 2001 were, of course, far more serious and impactful than a Hollywood movie; however, what happened that day was, as in the ending of "The Sixth Sense," something that changed the nature of everything which happened before (as well as after). And, like my experience in watching the movie, it is oh so easy to put together all of the "clues" once the "ending" is known. An attempt is being made to now hold President Bush and his team at least significantly responsible for allowing the attacks of 9/11 to happen. As part of this effort, all types of "clues" are coming out of the woodwork, from memos containing cryptic information to some terrorism guru's personal opinions. We have a commission established ostensibly to get to the bottom of what happened, of course with the ending already known. The flaw in all of this is we can never go back to the pre-9/11 period. It is difficult, if not impossible, to recreate the collective mindset of the nation and the world at that time. Saying that George W. Bush and his team should have known a band of maniacal suicidal murderers were going to hijack jet aircraft on the morning of September 11, 2001 and fly them into certain public buildings is borderline insane, regardless of what any "clues" may retrospectively say. Anything short of the specific information provided above, including flight numbers, would not have been enough to stop these particular attacks. It is time for our government and the so-called independent commissions to stop playing politics with the future safety and security of this nation. Attempting to assign blame now for the attacks of September 11 is fruitless. Empty apologies issued disingenuously by former "terrorism czars" do nothing to protect us now and into the future. Playing "Would have should have, could have" will not bring back the dead, rebuild the towers or defeat our enemies-- who even now are plotting their next cowardly actions against us. President Bush and his team have undertaken more proactive steps against terrorism than any other administration in this nation's history. These steps do not come without cost and without pain; Bush never promised they would. This battle is one that is not going to end overnight, and may in fact not ever have an ending as does a Hollywood production. The battle against these cowards is one which may in truth become a way of life, and perhaps it is time we start to fully comprehend that and what it means to each of us. ------------ About the author: Ed Abraham is a concerned citizen living in flyover country, U.S.A., who happens to be truly disgusted by the loss of common sense in our society and is doing all he can to try to reinstall it.
