Apr 9, 2004 In response to certain points of view posted on this website, which seemingly blame President Bush for everything from international poverty to cracked sidewalks, I feel compelled to state otherwise. The Bush presidency had indeed, despite reports tainted by an ever increasing left-wing press, has been a success. Perhaps it has been a somewhat painful one at that, as Bush attempts to correct the sins of our past, but it has been effective. President Bush inherited an economy in recession. The economic bubble which was created and grew during Bill Clinton's tenure had stretched to its limit and burst. Clinton sat around watching this take place and the Democrats warned Bush to "stop talking down the economy" during the 2000 election campaign when Bush tried to warn the country where we were headed. Bush was right, the economy tanked. When President Bush took office, he was faced with an uphill battle in getting the economy and stock market back on their symbolic feet. Then on 9/11/01 the unthinkable happened. Years of bowing to or ignoring terrorist attacks finally emboldened them to attempt the most cowardly and devastating attack in U.S. history. The warnings we experienced during the Clinton years (and prior) went unheaded and the U.S. was not prepared for the assault. Not only was there significant psychological loss to the U.S. and the world, the threat to the economy from this act of war was also significant. Bush took action. He calmly told the nation that we could no longer afford the luxury of being wrong about terrorists and what they might do. The U.S. military drove the taliban from Afghanistan in a matter of days, even as the liberal press and Democrats said it couldn't be done--that even the Russians couldn't hold Afghanistan when they tried. Bush continued with Iraq. After 9/11, we could not sit back and wait to see if Iraq under Hussein would continue to be a dark unknown threat. Hussein was openly scoffing at the ceasefire terms of the first Iraq War as well as multiple UN Resolutions. The UN was doing nothing about this, so Bush put the pressure on them. The truth is we knew, as did thew world, Hussein had WMD's and we had a choice: 1. Sit and wait to see if he would transfer these weapons to terrorists or; 2. Take action, enforce the existing ceasefire terms and UN Resolutions, and verify once and for all whether or not WMD's were present in Iraq. Bush chose the latter, and good for him. Again, the press warned we could not beat Iraq's impenetrable army. The "Republican National Guard" was composed of fierce warriors who could not be beat. (No they just dropped their weapons and ran, that's all.) The U.S. and its allies controlled the country in a matter of weeks. Now the cowardly enemy is left with blowing up car bombs near restaurants or committing other cowardly acts, which are actions made from weakness and desparation not strength. In terms of the economy, due to Bush's solid leadership, it did not whither and retreat. It is a testament to the success against terrorism and the confidence instilled by Bush's actions that, lesss than a year after what could have been devastating actions, the U.S. and world economies were back pretty much on track. U.S. citizens were again free to worry about prescription drug coverage for the elderly or educational improvements in our schools. Yet, liberal thinkers cannot see the irony in this. Had Bush not done such a good job after 9/11, we would not have been able to worry about these "domestic issues." Going back to even before this president took office, he has been unfairly targeted and criticized from the left. He has been called everything from a "cowboy" (and why exactly that is considered an insult I don't understand) to a moron, from an incompetent to a slick conniving con artist. (Yes, the left wing insults actually contradict themselves very often with this president. Is he a moron or is he a slick con artist? Bush's enemies cannot even make up their minds.) There is no doubt the attacks will continue to come in droves against this man and his administration. Bush has lead with his conscience since he's been in office, but this means nothing. We're talking about a Democratic party, together with its media cohorts, who have endlessly attempted to rewrite the accomplishments of Ronald Reagan's presidency, as if it was a horrific time in American history. It won't work on my. I remember Reagan taking over an economy in the dumps, a national psyche which was in the toilet and a world opinion of our nation at its lowest, and turning it all around in a few short years. The downfall of communism in the former Soviet Union was just the icing on the cake. It's too bad the liberals among us never even bothered taking a bite of that cake. ------------ Email Edward Abraham: eabra@myway.com Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
