Dwayne Hines II

Linebacker Limbo
Feb 27, 2003

In a recent edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, sports columnist Jim Thomas breaks down the Ram's needs for free agency. In particular he examines the linebacker situation, an area where the Rams definitely need a boost. Thomas writes that "If the club can improve its cap situation, it can take a look at an intriguing list of free-agent linebackers. Rosevelt Colvin, Anthony Simmons, Shelton Quarles and Mike Peterson all could be a nice fit. Colvin would add a pass-rushing dimension to a defense that could use a second option to left end Leonard Little. Quarles worked with coordinator Lovie Smith in Tampa Bay. Simmons' speed makes him a natural fit in the defense." Thomas' insight is accurate, but there is one excellent linebacker choice he overlooked - Detroit's Chris Clariborne. Clairborne is considered by some as Detroit's finest defensive player and he anchors the linebacker group from the middle linebacker position. The Rams sorely need an upgrade at middle linebacker, where Jamie Duncan was a big disappointment last year. Clairborne has good size (just under 260) and won't be pushed around. In the past three years at Detroit he has put up impressive numbers, with close to 400 tackles, 10.5 sacks and several interceptions. Clairborne would be a good fit for the Rams, allowing the Ram's one excellent linebacker, Tommy Polley, to play outside. If the Rams are wise, they should have Clairborne in for a visit.
