June 9, 2003 I've read some fairly articulate articles on this website by youngsters who profess to be young Democrats. They are probably quite honest about their affiliation since mostly what's posted is the same old nonsense we've been hearing from the Democrats for at least the last 35 years or so. One suspects that these youngsters are sincere, but it's patently obvious that they've been led astray by the siren song of "equality for all" that Democrats profess to champion. Let's set the records straight. When Democrats speak of "equality for all," they are NOT speaking of equality of opportunity, which is what we were promised by the Founding Fathers. They are speaking of a mythical concept of "equality of OUTCOME," meaning that no one should prosper more than anyone else, and, if they do, they should be punished for doing so. The concept is based on a belief that the world's economy is zero-based. That is, that for one to prosper, someone else, somewhere, must suffer deprivation. That's nonsense and flies in the face of history and modern economic theory. New wealth is being created every day--usually by someone with a good idea that catches on with the public. The definition of theft in every penal code in the country is: "The taking of property by force, threat of force or by stealth, by someone to whom the property does not belong and converting it to one's own use or to the use of anyone else, not the owner." That's a pretty reliable description of the income tax. We have the top 50% of income-earners paying 95% of all income taxes and the top 60% paying ALL of 'em. That means that 40% of wage-earners are paying NO income taxes whatsoever. That constitutes a country where nearly half of the population is leeching from the other half. No nation can endure for long in that manner. It needs to be repeated, once again, that corporations DO NOT PAY INCOME TAXES! A corporation's tax liabilities are included in the price of its goods or services, so the people who actually PAY a corporation's taxes are those that buy or use those goods and services--in other words, us. I've never understood the United Auto Workers' insistence on higher and higher wages and more and more benefits for its members, for example. Even they should know that all that does is raise the price of the automobiles they make, costing THEM more and more to drive a decent car. These increases in wages and benefits aren't paid out of Ford Motor Company's profits. They are paid by the CONSUMERS of Ford products. Eventually, one reaches the point of diminishing returns and people simply stop buying new cars and trucks and make do for longer and longer with the ones they already own. That costs JOBS as workers are laid off due to lack of demand for the cars and trucks they make. Add to that the mandates imposed by the Federal Government, all of which add to the cost of the vehicles, and you have a car that not so long ago cost $3,500 new now costing ten times as much. The Democrats, on the other hand, would not propose anything to alleviate that situation, but rather to exacerbate it, by imposing more and more costs. Costs that will be borne by the consumer alone. It's the height of arrogance for liberal Democrats to decry that someone has "too much money" or has "succeeded too well," or should pay higher and higher percentages of their income because "they can afford it." Who ARE these people who presume to tell us who should succeed and who should be punished FOR succeeding? They are the leftists in the Democrat Party (and a few Eastern Republicans as well) who think that only THEY know what's good for the rest of us. Democrat-inspired policies that are designed to take from the successful and give to the slothful have the side benefit of creating a large constituency of people who'll go to the polls and keep these same Democrats in office in perpetuity so they (the voters) can get more and more largesse from the public treasury. Self-interest isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it should be ENLIGHTENED self-interest that recognizes that success in this world is NOT dependent upon government hand-outs or imposing one's will on others by fiat, but by hard work, honesty, diligence, sacrifice and dedication to a goal. Unfortunately, the Democrats are succeeding in teaching our young people that we somehow "owe" it to the slothful to provide for their needs at the expense of those who are willing to be honest, diligent and dedicated and who are willing to forego instant gratification for a long-term goal. Don't be seduced. ------------ Email David Allen Jared: Pappadave@sbcglobal.net |
