June 5, 2003 There's a lot of speculation, charges, etc. around lately--particularly from the Democrat hopefuls (and a few that are simply sunk) that President Bush and/or his administration lied to the American people about the existence of WMD's in Iraq to justify the recently-past war. Sheer logic should tell us that charge is simply nonsense--and transparently partisan nonsense, to boot. It's really simple to reason out. We KNOW that Hussein had WMD's at the end of Desert Storm. We documented the destruction of quite a large volume of 'em, though not all. The UN inspectors verified (and aided) the destruction of vast stores of biological and chemical weaponry, proscribed missiles, etc. up to the day they were ousted by Saddam as "spies for the CIA" in 1998. At that time, we knew that there were several tons of WMD chemical/biological agents that had been known to exist, but had not been destroyed. That being the case (and it's extensively documented by the U.N. inspectors' reports at the time), where are they? We KNOW he had 'em in 1998. He's never accounted for 'em since--even knowing doing so would have saved him from being ousted from power. He was given 7 long months to come up with documentation to prove that he'd destroyed 'em. He didn't. Logic dictates that there are only a few possible answers to that question, "where are they?" (1) He's hidden them in a bunker or under the sand to use later. (2) He's sold 'em or given 'em to some terrorist agency for use against Hussein's perceived enemies when the time is right. (3) He relocated them months ago to a friendly government, much as he did his air force during Desert Storm, in hopes of retrieving 'em when the war was over. (4) He destroyed 'em a few days before the onset of hostilities so he could claim that he never had 'em, once the war was over. (Remember, he undoubtedly expected to survive THIS one, too.) Any of those four possibilites could be true. If he HAD destroyed 'em months ago, there's not a reason on Earth why he wouldn't have produced the necessary documentation of their destruction once the inspections were resumed and saved his regime. I don't know which scenario is the truth, but it's also an absolute, proven FACT that Hussein DID have WMD's during the 90's and their disposition has never been revealed--as he was REQUIRED to do, both by the various UN resolutions AND by the agreement he signed to end hostilities at the end of Desert Storm. In psychiatry, there's a term often used. TRANSFERRENCE. In this context, it simply means that since his liberal critics would lie without hesitation, President Bush MUST have lied, too.
