California Dreams
Aug 12, 2003

I am not from California, but I don't live in a cave either. So I can't escape news about the California recall, though I often wish I could.

Now I am going to say something that will have some questioning my conservative credentials: I don't think that Gray Davis should be recalled. Don't get me wrong, I am no Davis fan. He has two defining qualitites that define him. Arrogance and incompetence. Now these qualities go against each other. Since he is incompetent he can't recognize his arrogance and since he is arrogant he doesn't realize that he is incompetent. Circular reasoning, but true. He has made a mess out of the nations wealthiest state. Democratic presidential candidates harp about the economy, but fail to mention that most of the jobs lost have been in California, a state run from top to bottom by democrats.

Now what does this have to do with me being against Davis' recall? 1)Recalls should not be used simply because voters have buyers remorse. They made the choice, they should have to live with it. A reacll should be for offenses committed by public officials, not for just doing a bad job. 2)This will open up a can of worms that no one really wants to open. If the recall is successful then the democrats will launch a recall effort against the recall winner. It will practically be a civil war. 3)I don't see any great alternatives. Arnold may very well win. But his victory is no victory for conservatism. He is a liberal in the GOP. Any conservatives that are running are long shots, and can't win. Bill Simon will put up a lot of money and may start to make ground but in the end will fail again. 4)Davis in office is better for the GOP. If in 2004 Davis is still in office and still making a mess of things then the GOP can point to the democrats and say it is time for a change.

Arnold is a social liberal, not what California needs. Despite all of his talk of fiscal conservatism. Someone already made this point on national review online, though I forget who. So fiscal conservatism and social liberalism is an oxymoron. Social liberalism costs a lot of money thus cancelling the fiscal conservatism. Arnold could win, after all with Arnold now the frontrunner the theory that this is a rightwing conspiracy is gone.

Its a circus. With actors and social activists, and pornographers and joe sixpack running it will be at least an interesting circus. We have forgotten actor Gary Coleman and hypocrite Arianna Huffington running to repalce Davis. For political junkies this is a dream come true. For everyone else this can't end soon enough.
