Drawing the Wrong Conclusions
Mar 16, 2004

The war on terror has been going on for nearly 3 years. In that time we have suffered defeats, but we have also won victories. In fact, we have won more victories than we have suffered defeats.

Now Johan, you say Bush had to do something after 9/11, very true. You came to the right conclusion. Yet you are critical of the war using the violence begets violence theory. What should have been done? Hunt down the individuals responsible take them to the Hague and leave the Taliban and Saddam Hussein in power with Libya greedily acquiring nuclear weapons?

Now contrary to fashionable opinion on both sides of the Atlantic, Bush is not stupid. He hnew that attacking the terrorists would cause them to make counter attacks. However, not attacking would have been weak and given us even more attacks. Our war against them our hunting them down and driving them out of their hideouts putting them into prison and giving them a one way express ticket to hell was the right way to go.

Saying that we should not have gone to war is like going back to the late 1930's and saying let Hitler have the sudentanland, if he gets that he will stop. I remember very vividly watching the towers collapse. If we had done nothing then what would have happened? The terrorists smelling blood would have increased their attacks. Instead we have them reduced to attacking nations that have no real security. Al-qaida used to attack what it wanted to now it attacks what it can.

The war on terror has been beneficial, not just to the U.S. but also to Europe. Europeans can delude themselves all they want, you were always a target regardless of your support for us.Turkey was opposed to us and were still attacked.

We must draw the correct conclusions. We were attacked. We struck back, now they are weakened. Can you say weakening them was wrong? We toppled two bloodthirsty maniacal dictatorships, and a third surrendered his weapons. Libyas lunatic leader saw Hussein being dragged out of a hole and feared that it could happen to him. It's cause and effect. We beat them up and now we get some cooperation out of them.

The war was the right thing to do. It ended two mass murdering totalitarian dictatorships. It got one country to surrender its weapons. Iran is allowing inspectors in(though I am sceptical of their efficency).

We can't appease, we can only fight.
