Back to Pakistan
Feb 12, 2004

I wrote an article in December entitled "On the Brink" about the problems in Pakistan. The article led to a lenghty email debate with someone about what should actually be done.

You see, this person who I respect and agree with 99% of the time were at a disagreement here. He thought I was jumping the gun, advocating war where none was needed. Although I never once mentioned taking military action I think we need to do something about the problems in the country.

Pakistans top nuclear scientist admitted to giving away technology and nuclear secrets to other nations to help them develop nuclear weapons. All this happened while President Musharaf claimed that the nuclear weapons in his nation were secure. Countries like Iran, North Korea, and Libya were all beneficiaries, and now Pakistan has said it will help Nigeria, a nation with a large radical islamic population with their missles.

See the problem? We have an "ally" that is actively working for the very people we are trying to defeat. So what is to be done? Well let me say that I don't think we need to invade Pakistan. But we need to get tough with our "ally" or we could face far greater problems than already exsist in that area of the world.

We give large amounts of foreign aid to Pakistan, perhaps it's time to say no more. Or maybe we just need to let Musharaf know that we will no longer tolerate anymore of this behavior.

Whatever we do, we need to do it soon. We don't need President Bush saying Pakistan has joined the "axis of evil".
