Jan 15, 2004 Often the Democrats and the Republicans are refered to as the evil party and the stupid party respectively. I do think that these labels are unfair, unless someone can prove to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that all republicans are stupid and all democrats are evil. I think the better labels are the scary party and the sane party. Let me give some examples. Last night I was watching the state of the state address. Now my governor is a lame duck, he isn't even going to run for reelection. Such a politician that he called tax hikes "revenue enhancement" pretty sad when you need to be fluent in political speech to understand what they are saying. But I suppose that if the average guy on the street could figure out what was being said there would be another revolution. Anyway my state, the state of West Virginia is controlled by the scary party. Let me illustrate. During his speech Gov. Wise laid out what he wants to do during the next year. Most of it sounds rather noble(although once you decipher what he said you realize all he is doing is applying band aids)What is scary is this: whenever he mentioned tax hikes...oops... I mean "revenue enhancements" and creating new commissions or departments he got applauses and standing ovations in some cases. Whenever he mentioned making it easier for businesses to come to West Virginia he was met with a very cold silence. That is what I mean by scary. A party so endeared to the philsophy of socialism that the very mention of business or the private sector makes them go crazy. Another good example is the primary in Washington D.C. This is not an important primary. It sends no delegates to the national convention, so most candidates didn't bother running in it. Howard Dean won of course but it is the second place that strikes me. Al Sharpton won second. Now true, D.C., is overwhelmingly black and democratic. However given the choice between Sharpton a racist hate-monger that has incited violence that has led to peoples deaths, and between Carolyn Mosley-Braun a former senator with a very liberal voting record, the voters chose the former. I guess this shows the psychosis that has infected the democratic party. So in what ways is the republican party the sane party? Well let me count the ways. We are not obsessed with this phony idea of multilateralism. As if the dozens of countries we have participating don't count. We don't feel the need to go to Paris and grovel for their help. The republicans think that it is your money, you should get to keep it. Mention a tax cut around a democrat and he will automatically go into some bizarre rhetoric about favoring the rich (translation its ours now and you can't have any of it back). I think most importantly is who is running the party. Yes, there are fringe rightists in the GOP. But they aren't in mainstream. Look who the mainstream is in the democrats. For all of the denunciations about George W. Bush being a right winger what proof do they really have? He cut taxes? He went into Iraq? He also doubled the federal budget, made his landmark legislation a huge entitlement for seniors and passed a huge bill for education, hardly the stuff jack boot wearers are made of. If there are any sane democrats left they have two choices, take back there party,(and that doesn't mean supporting Wesley Clark he's as nutty as Dean) or leave it. Which party do you belong to? The scary party that is determined to commit mass suicide or the sane party that actually has ideas that aren't all from the 1960's? ------------ Email Craig Chamberlain: craig_chamberlain@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum.
