Jan 12, 2004 Staunch republican that I am, that doesn't mean that I never have any criticism for my party or a republican politician. Certainly I have objections to the Presidents plan to put a man on Mars and establish a base on the moon. None of this will happen for years but I still think it is a bad idea. First of all, it's too expensive. We are fighting a world wide war against terrorists. This alone is costing us billions of dollars I think defeating lunatics who want to wipe our nation off the face of the earth is more important than saying we were the first country to put a man on Mars. We have troops in Afghanistan and in Iraq, and the President wants to give an extra 750 million dollars to NASA. Now that is not a lot of money to the feds, but every dollar of that came from an American taxpayer, why not let them keep it? The republican party has been, for the last century, the party of fiscal responsibility. Sadly that is no longer seems to be the case. It's true that we have more of a grip on spending than the democrats, but not much. Soon the difference will be like the difference between two drunks:one starts drinking at 7am and the other starts drinking at 8am. One starts an hour later but both are still drunks. The republicans spend 2 trillion, the democrats want to spend 4 trillion both are still addicted to tazpayer money. Spend, spend, spend seems to be the mantra of both parties. It's just too expensive. Let's spend the money on something useful like defeating the islamofascists. Secondly, what good would it do? Do we expect to find little green men living there? As far as I know there are no resources on the moon, probably nothing useful on Mars either. What good would a base on the moon do? What benefits would it bring? Let's at least try and solve problems on our own world before we go to another one. Republicans were supposed to be the party of fiscal responsibility. What happened? Let's win the war, really fix immigration(instead of giving legal status to illegals). Let's cut our bloated budget, let's get our judiciary under constitutional control instead of having judicial activism run amok. In short let's not throw money into a black hole for something that will bring nothing more than bragging rights. ------------ Email Craig Chamberlain: craig_chamberlain@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum.
