Dec 3, 2003 Well, here we are at the end of the college football season. Now the traditional complaining begins. Hey, I admit I don't like the current system, I would like to see a playoff system. But lets be honest there's too much money in the bowl system. Now, I know people don't like co champions. It feels like things are unfinished. Now I admit, I am a fanatical West Virginia fan and I absolutely despise the Miami Hurricanes, in fact I wish that entire city would sink into the ocean. West Virginia won 7 games in a row. The reason they share the big east title is they beat Virginia Tech 28-7, Miami got clobbered by Virginina Tech. So that creates a problem. West Virginia loses to Miami 22-20, beats Tech 28-7. Now I wish the big east had been won outright, and that West Virginia had won it. But I don't make the rules. Now back to the bowls. Well, first of all there are too many of them. You have games that no one cares about. The New Orleans bowl for example.Secondly only the teams the sports writers care about have a chance at a major bowl game. Notre Dame, for example, went 6-5 one year and was given a fiesta bowl berth. Now a team like, oh say, WVU would have to go 12-0 in order to make a BCS bowl. Thirdly conference should make no difference as to bowl berth. An undefeated team should be given as much a chance whether they are from conference USA or from the Big Ten. So, if we want competition let's get rid of the bowl games. All of them. Conference championships mean little when compared to the bowl system. ------------ Email Craig Chamberlain: craig_chamberlain@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum.
