Nine Brave Men
Nov 26, 2003

Well, the era of big government was declared over. It wasn't then during the Clinton years and it sure isn't now. With the passage of the medicare "reform" bill we can now say that both parties are for big governmnment.

The "reform", with a 400 billion dollar price tag, will create a bueraucratic nightmare for senior citizens. Most of whom already had prescription drug coverage. Realistically the 400 billion is underestimated and will cost much more.

Politics being what it is this was all done for votes. Not since the whigs in 1840 with their parties and free drinks has a political party done something with such a blatant attempt to buy votes. Now keep in mind I am a republican. I believe in small and limited government. So it pains me to beat up my own party like this. Will this help Bush in 04? Maybe, but maybe not. Seniors tend to vote democratic anyway and no amount of pandering is really going to change that. Like Esau selling his birthright for a mess of pottage the republicans have sold their principles for a few votes.

At least nine GOP senators had the courage to stand up and say no to this mess. I applaud them. - Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. (Now most likely he voted because it didn't spend enough money but at least he voted against it.)

- John Ensign of Nevada
- Lindsey Graham of South Carolina
- Judd Gregg of New Hampshire
- Chuck Hagel of Nebraska
- Trent Lott of Mississippi
- John McCain of Arizona
- Don Nickles of Oklahoma
- John Sununu of New Hampshire

These nine men(well eight at least) deserve praise for standing up to big government and trying, although in vain, to restrain government spending and preventing the waste of taxpayer money. If the GOP wants real reform in medicare, they should privatize it.
