Oct 13, 2003 I am typically not a fan of the Nobel prize in anything. In my opinion, its just a bunch of lefties in Norway giving away prizes, money and fame to a bunch of like minded leftists. However, even I feel this years recipient of the peace prize was a good choice. Shirin Ebadi the recipient of the prize is an Iranian lawyer, was the first woman Judge in Iran until the revolution forced her from the bench and now is an activist for human rights and democracy in her country. She is using the money and the prestige of the award to call for the release of political prisoners in Iran. Will the mullahs cooperate? I doubt it. I can't wait for the day, which is not that far off in my opinion, when the thuggish theocrats are tossed on the ash heap of history. Its rahter refreshing to see the prize go to someone who actually deserves it for a change. On to other things now. Conjoined twins from Egypt, were succesfully seperated in Dallas Texas. Now I think this is wonderful for the family and obviously for the children themselves. Yet, I think it important to point out that when the kids needed surgery they ended up in the good ol' USA. They didn't end up in a European or Canadian hospital that has been so socialized that they have stopped practicing medicine. I think it even more ironic that they ended up in Dallas. No city is more maligned by liberals than Dallas and no state more hated by them than Texas. So the next time an advocate of socialized medicine starts singing the praises of Canadaian or European hospitals and that American hospitals are pitiless corporations they need to remember that people in the third world would rather have treatment in a capitalist nation. I think this speaks volumes for our health care system, which is supposed to be such a wreck. Well, now Arnold is governor of California. Well, I never was in favor of the recall, it smelled to strongly of populism for my taste. But I am not particuarly sorry to see Gray Davis unemployed soon. I hope Arnold can fix the state, but I think he is going to have massive hurdles in his way. As long as he sticks to economic problems and doesn't allow his social liberalism to get in the way, and doesn't fight with the conservative wing of the party he should do fine. Maybe the governor elect can lead a republican renaissance and kick the democrats out, only time will tell. ------------ Email Craig Chamberlain: craig_chamberlain@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum.
