Chuck Tyler

That Darned Jayson!
May 15, 2003

I’m angry.

No, I’m livid.

Apparently, the entire Negro College Fund is not necessary. There’s no need to go to school if you’re Black.

You can just use your imagination and write for prominent newspapers in America.

As a Black man and a writer, I’m incensed.

It seems as though I should have worked Monster.com to the bone and blasted my resume to as many as the over 6,000 newspapers in this great nation instead of hacking for local newspapers trying to build a clip file.

I could have been hired several times over! I could have been drafting factual fiction from a beachfront home by now…

Instead, thousands of writers sloughed through inane and inappropriate journalism classes that had titles like “ethics” and “morality” embedded in their course descriptions.

Thanks, Jayson, for screwing the pooch for all of us brothers and sisters who wanted to buck the system in a country that rewards hard work and ethics with untold fame, fortune and that deep sense of satisfaction.

You know, like the one you feel when you’ve actually done something honorable and with effort— like, maybe, actually interviewed someone? Or actually researched something, and then wrote about it factually?

Jayson, Jayson, Jayson…I cannot wait for the “Movie of the Week”. Or maybe the next collaboration between Blair and Stephen King?

Ah, the liberal narcotic of allowing a person to avoid a middle passage of real work and creating credentials simply because they are of this persuasion, or that hue.

I’m wondering what it will now take for those of us who look up to Leonard Pitts to be recognized for the content of our creations, and not the color of the hands that craft them?

Again, thanks, Jayson.

God Bless America.
