Mar 28, 2003 I’ve been reading the tragic stories of human shields who had to return to their home countries because Bush was so slow in pulling the trigger on Saddam Hussein. Story after story of disillusioned people, willing to push the Iraqi women and children Saddam had already emplaced around his weapons and depots, to prevent Coalition munitions from dropping. I’m in tears. What has happened to a world where a man or woman can’t chain him- or herself to an antiaircraft gun? Where are we headed if a peace-loving individual cannot sit atop an ammunition dump to avert war? I’m attempting to contact these pitiful people in these articles to employ them as human shields yet again. Imagine how wonderful they’ll feel in southern Los Angeles, standing arm-in-arm in front of a liquor store as gangs drive by! Feel their fulfillment as a human shield steps between a battered wife and her drunk, enraged husband! Can’t you see them making a REAL difference in the world then? Human shields. It’s as if they are protecting what—weapons of mass destruction? It’s as if they would be doing what—prolonging the inevitable demise of a despot? I’m wondering what it’s like to feel so strongly against a just cause, that you are compelled to act out in an idiotic manner. I guess it’s the same compunction that allows people to lay down in the streets of New York or Washington, or vomit on the city hall steps of San Francisco. Yes, I’m in tears. I can’t stop laughing at these idiots. God Bless America. About the author: Chuck Tyler is a freelance writer and journalist based in South Bend, Indiana.
