The Letter
Jan 29, 2004

I received a letter in the mail.

Addressed to me, at the newspaper. Messy, but fancy handwriting in blue. Plain white envelope.

I opened it while alone. Had a zing as I read it. A tip off. Anonymous letter, saying a city official had slit his wife's throat years ago. When it was reported, police did nothing, the letter said. She lived. He divorced her. End of story. "Our City deserves better," the letter said.

With an unsigned letter what do I do? Can't ask further questions. Can't find out more. Go to police and ask about the records? This is the very department the letter writer is implying did a cover up.

While I was staring at the letter, the phone suddenly rang...A friend I'd lost touch with... calling to congratulate me on some articles she'd seen with my byline. It didn't take long though, until she was ragging on reporters. I was too sensitive, I should have let it go...but spoke back to her instead...meantime my ex-boyfriend called on the other line, to see if I would still consider marrying him...and just then my ex- husband beeped in to see if I could do him a favor. Then the cleaning crew came in, bringing along their grandchildren. A little girl granddaughterpink feather dusted me as I tried to juggle phone calls, going back and forth between ex-boyfriend, ex-husband and ex-friend.

"No, I can't marry you," I said to my ex- boyfriend.

"Yes, I can do the errand," I said to my ex- husband.

"All reporters don't misquote and I will catch ya later," I said to my long-lost friend.

The pink feather duster cleaning granddaughter, received just laughter.

Then they all left me alone again again with the letter.

Tell the police? Call the councilman? Ask the Mayor? Ask the wife? Ask around? Do nothing, because it's just rumor?

Oh, the phone is ringing again....just a minute...while I answer it...Be right back...

Breaking news...gotta go. Tell you more about The Letter another day.
