The Coffee-lover
Oct 14, 2003

"What happened?" I squinted at my friend who sat in the blackness across from me at our favorite diner.

"The lights went out," she responded. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`~~~

The above words are the opening lines of the 14th Chaper of a book I am reviewing.

The book's name? Grace By The Cup.

The author? Louise Bergmann DuMont.

The price? $11.99 and you can buy it now on Amazon.com.

My opinion of the book? Buy it.

In the Chapter that I mentioned above, DuMont is eating with a friend at a dinner, when the lights suddenly go out. A waitress brings them a candle, assuring the two that with gas instead of electric, they can still prepare meals ...in the darkness, the waitress asks what they would like to eat.

DuMont, orders a western omlette and coffee. The waitress smiles at the omlette but winces at mention of coffee....because the coffee will have to be instant.

DuMont, a true coffee specialist, gulps when she is asked to have instant, and squeaks out a tiny, "okay." She notes that even by dim candlelight, she can see her friend is submerging a smile...knowing DuMont is a coffee specialist, and that given the choice between bad coffee and a really bad flu..DuMont would most likely choose the flu.

Anyway...she proceeds to pull comforting and motivating insights out of thin air in the dinner.

The clincher is that at her book signing today, DuMont taught a beginning writing class, where she covered so many topics and with such enthusiasm, it felt a priviledge to hear her speak. THIS is a talented and giving writer.

And her book is just what its subtitle says: Grace By The Cup: A Break From The Daily Grind.

Okay...I'd like to tell you more..but I am in the newsroom and gotta get working on a story. Talk to you tomorrow.
