Aug 14, 2003 It is the early morning of my birthday. I am in the newsroom, in a scratchy blue swivel chair, wearing a black dress. I have been awake all night, working on a story. When my co-workers soon start arriving in the newsroom with white cups of aromatic coffee, wrinkled brown bags, and sleepy looks, I will not mention I have been up all night. As far as my birthday plans, I am not sure what to do. I have accidentally double booked my night. A few days ago, a big, bear kind-of guy, who laughs a lot, invited me to take my shoes off and eat Sushi with him in restaurant on a far away hill tonight. But I'd said yes to Laughing-bear before realizing the day he picked was also my birthday. Suz, my red-headed, John Candy-like, high school friend with the giant personality, reminds me by e-mail, of our plans to go hear a great band at a hoppin' place tonight... to celebrate. Only I have no recollection of these plans at all. I e-mail her back, that I really ought to have dinner with Laughing-bear instead, so as not to hurt his feelings. She counters with a confession. Tonight is really a surprise party. She swears many assorted friends in party hats will be horrified if decide to eat fish on the floor with Laughing-bear, instead of appetizers on a dance floor with Suz. She advises me to either postpone with the bear... or to just invite Laughing-bear to come along with us. Before I can decide, the phone startles me. It is the Boston-flirt. I twirl my hair and smile as he speaks to me from Boston. He says, in his perfect voice, that today will be a day of amazing, wonderful surprises for me. At 1:47 p.m., I sit, typing out another story at lightning speed, with my radio headset on loud, when someone in the newsroom suddenly taps me really hard my left shoulder to get my attention. I turn fast to see what's happening. Know what? I have to get back to the newsroom now..... But I will tell ya tomorrow. ------------ About the author: Chrissa Falcon is a newspaper reporter in the New York Metropolitan Area.
