Apr 8, 2003 Again I was watching TV while baby-sitting. This is becoming a truly terrifying ordeal. Today Fox was airing a preview of its newest show The Swan. In my mind it epitomizes everything wrong with the female mind in today’s society. 17 middle-aged women, who are not drop dead gorgeous, are going to be selected and given the most extreme makeover of their lives. A team of plastic surgeons will place these women on harsh diets and exercise routines, as well as plastic surgery. Nose, chin, tummy and liposuction. From the moment these women go under the knife, they are not allowed to see themselves. So the first time they see themselves is three months later, on stage, surrounded by a gleeful crowd. After which they will compete to see who “turned out” the best. How did women get to this point? In the time of the Greeks and Romans the ideal was a big boned, voluptuous beauty. As time wore on to Middle Ages woman wore bustles and corsets to accentuate their rear ends and cleavage. The first true low point for women came in the twenties with the appearance of the flapper. These women tried their best to look like a zipper, with no curves or extra fat anywhere. After flappers came May West, Jean Harlow and Marilyn Monroe with their lush curves and realistic body builds. For a while it looked like womankind would make a come back from her brush with scrawniness. However in the seventies women again shifted toward gaunt bodies and minds. As Twiggy flaunted lingerie on the catwalk women again began dieting. The media picked up the image of the luxuriously lean body and ran with it. Soon it was everywhere, magazines, TV, music, even billboards. How far we have fallen from Greek and Roman times to now, when eating disorders are the number one killer in teenaged females in the US this year. When all the latest clothing styles showoff more skin than than they conceal. And when women think they have to be a size zero and never eat. ------------ About the author: Catherine has joined the AirForce, and continues to be aware of the eating disorders of her fellow women.
