July 3, 2003 The Democratic presidential hopefuls have become lemmings, marching inexorably leftward, leftward, leftward, marching toward a cliff overlooking the cold Arctic Ocean. They are scrambling to see who can take the lead in the suicidal race toward the Democratic nomination. And they don't even need Disney photographers to shoo them over the edge. It seems to escape their notice that the last lemmings who marched that way tumbled off the cliff into oblivion, more or less: George McGovern lost in a landslide and not much has been heard of him since. Walter Mondale veered leftward and couldn't even salvage a win in the senate race in Minnesota last year. Those who seem weak-kneed and wimpy on defense have never fared well in elections for the office of POTUS, though they sometimes win in house and senate races in really leftist districts and states. It is truly puzzling to contemplate why the Democratic Party has allowed itself to become hijacked by the extreme left wing. The Democrats who have won the presidency have either been honestly for strong defense or managed to fake it: FDR, Truman, Kennedy, and then the faker, Clinton. Joseph Leiberman appeared to be, until the past few days, the only one with a decent record in favor of defense of the homeland. And he now looks to be dragged more and more leftward by the need to pander to the far-left radicals who have become predominant in primaries and caucuses in the Democratic Party. This lemming migration bodes ill for Democratic chances in 2004. I can imagine George W. Bush getting out the blender and the sugar and the water, looking forward to mixing up a huge pitcher of ice cold lemmingade.
