Mar 14, 2004 Looks like al Qaeda blew up a few trains and the Spanish voters tossed out the anti-terrorist government in response. This is a dangerous development in world politics. If anything was learned from Neville Chamberlain and his dealings with Hitler, it is that appeasement doesn't work. The result was World War 2, which could likely have been avoided if Europe had taken a firm stand against Hitler's early demands. The Spanish voters, having forgotten the lessons of Chamberlain's appeasement, completely misunderstanding terrorism at best and completely cowardly at worst, have given in to the terrorists, elected someone who promises to withdraw troops from Iraq, and who appears ready to knuckle under to terrorist demands. This bodes ill for Spain, as it will only encourage the other terrorists to blow up more people to get their demands fulfilled, and it bodes ill for the rest of Europe, as the terrorists may target London next, as another supporter of the USA, and it bodes ill for the USA, as sooner or later they will think they can get appeasement here, too. So far, they know that the American people do not react as the Spanish do. We took the fight to them, killing thousands, taking away two of their training-base countries, and deposing two evil repressive regimes. That is one reason they haven't attacked us again. With Bush in the White House, they know that another attack would cause us to redouble our efforts and kill even more of them. Syria, Iran, and other countries which have supported, harbored, and trained terrorists are probably reining in the extremist groups, keeping a damper on them, lest Bush decide Damascus or Teheran must be leveled. But what would happen if Kerry, a known anti-war dude, someone easily swayed by polls, someone not known for sticking to a position or principle, was elected? Would this not encourage more terrorist attacks in hopes of extorting more appeasement from Kerry? Darn right it would! We can't afford another week-kneed Democrat in the White House Right now. Trust me on this one. ------------ About the author: 62-yr-old physician, still practicing, retired from 41 years intermittent military service as of June 1, 2003. Just write for the fun of it.
