The Gucci Wallet Syndrome
Oct 28, 2003

I had a patient many years ago, a very bright and funny woman, who had had a dream, she claimed, wherein an angel had told her that she would never die unless she owned a Gucci wallet. She made sure that no friends or family would ever give her a Gucci wallet for Christmas or birthdays, and since she would never purchase a Gucci wallet for herself, she claimed she would live forever.

The Democratic Party has many Gucci wallets which they refuse to buy, but the Gucci wallet changes to suit their need of the moment.

When we were contemplating action in Iraq, the first Gucci wallet was that members of congress demanded that they needed to be consulted and vote first. The first Gucci wallet was congressional approval. Their bluff was called, Bush went to the congress, and they voted for the war in Iraq. That Gucci wallet ploy failed.

Then the Gucci wallet became UN approval. So Bush went to the UN and multiple resolutions were obtained requiring Saddam to comply.

Then the Gucci wallet became the approval of the Security Council.

Then the approval of France and Germany became the elusive Gucci wallet.

When that didn't work, the Gucci wallet became the capture of bin Laden. No way should we go to war in Iraq without having killed or captured bin Laden. (Never mind that he is, to a fairly high probability, already dead and under tons fo rock in Tora Bora, Afghanistan.)

Now that the Security Council, including France, Germany, and Russia, have voted for the war in Iraq, there will certainly be another item to assume the Gucci wallet symbolism. It will certainly be something which we haven't yet achieved or can't acquire, but it will become the sine qua non of our war on terrorism to the Democrats.

The Democrats have the ability to manufacture Gucci wallets ad infinitum. I think it is time that we simply ignore their demand for Gucci wallets and go about the war on terrorism despite these demands.
