Sept 16, 2003 "Good evening America. It is an honor to be here as Representative of the people of our country to debate the future of America from two distinct ideologies. My Democratic opponent, Governor Dean will present distinctly opposite views of the role of government in America and I encourage everyone to pay close attention to the specific points of our comparative visions. Over the past 100 years a battle has been fought between two distinct viewpoints of government and liberty. On one front is the American, people centric viewpoint whereby capable individuals are given the opportunity to succeed, to make a life for themselves and to live in a secure land protected from enemies from both the outside and inside. Capitalism and free markets are the economic model whereby government's role is to limit the tax burden and protect against fraud. Entitlements in America are expected to be minimal and directed at those people that are incapacitated and unable to achieve success, not those that are too lazy or ungrateful to achieve success on their own. Government in all its branches is limited in its role in society and operates behind the scenes to protect our borders and our culture. America is a country that believes in God and traditional family values, we are embarrassed by perversion and intolerant of crimes against another. We punish the people that cause us harm swiftly and with force. Government should hesitate at every chance to spend the people's money and it should recognize that its existence is the result of the taxes and financial burdens it places on all American's. Equal opportunity is the law of the land and we do not grant special privileges by right to any American over another except to those who obey the laws over those that seek to destroy and disregard them. Being a legal citizen of our country and the privileges that go with it are earned not entitled. On the international front, America plays a humanitarian role in protecting and establishing the same human rights and freedoms we enjoy for those that do not have the ability to help themselves. My view of America is strength, power, security, opportunity, freedom and justice. It is a belief that America is the greatest country in the history of civilization not because of its government, but because of its people. There is another viewpoint of the role of government and that is a government centric model whereby government grants rights and entitlements and exists to protect the rights they define. The role of government expressed by Mr. Dean whether knowingly or not is that of provider and comforter, the central point of the lives of the people of our country. There has been a viewpoint for hundreds of years where government is expected to protect people from their own bad choices, to provide education, medical coverage, housing, food, protection, and other services not only for those incapable of achieving it, but for those that have not made the sacrifices to achieve these on their own. This viewpoint of government is class envy and wealth redistribution whereby the successful members of society are demonized and expected to give up their income and financial wealth to those that have not achieved success. The logical goal of this model is a single class in society whereby everyone achieves the same level of success, no more, no less. In this viewpoint, government is the provider of your education and is responsible for your medical well being. There is no room for religion in this society because government is the moral and legal authority and the protection and advancement of the state is the goal. Government's desire is to self perpetuate and the dependency of its success rests on maintaining the individual's fear and reliance on its services. This form of government inherently creates warfare among diverse groups by attempting to homogonize everyone to a single viewpoint. Those that do not follow the prevailing viewpoint are intimidated through the courts and through public opinion. Sexual freedom exists everywhere unbound by religious morality and society's sense for decency. Unknowingly, Mr. Dean's viewpoint of America and vision is dangerously consistent with the visions of Communist Russia in the end of the last century. I caution everyone to carefully listen to Mr. Dean's messages tonight: taxes on the wealthy, government sponsored healthcare, government mandated education, income balancing through transfer of wealth, no religion in society, expanded government services. Not only does Mr. Dean ideologies align with the Socialist agenda, the most dangerous aspect is that he combines it with a drastic reduction in military strength to protect our security. Tonight you will have the opportunity to decide point by point on the future of America. Please listen to the facts, cut through the rhetoric and emotions and consider what your future vision of our great country holds and who it is most consistent with." ------------ Email Brett Keirstead: bkeirst@msn.com Comment on this column in the forum.
