Aug 1, 2003 I expect to see this headline flashing across TV screens all over the world at any moment, now. My fervent hope is that he is taken alive. Why? Because it is better for America and our troops still in Iraq to capture a live ex- tyrant than create a dead martyr. This is what he will become if he is killed by American forces. Saddam has already come out with a communiqui stating he is aware of the deaths of his two sons, and is asking Iraqi loyalists to look upon them as martyrs in heaven. The voice on the tape, verified as that of Saddam, said Odai and Qusai died for the sake of God, the nation and the people. By the looks of the continuing violence against our troops in Iraq, the loyalists are heeding his words. You only have to look at the doubts that arose in the minds of the Iraqi people, both Saddam loyalists and those terrified his terrified regime will somehow will regain its power, who refused to believe his two murderous sons were really dead. Their bodies had to be displayed in public. There will be even more doubt if Saddam is killed or commits suicide because he has used so many people as doubles during his years in power. The Bush administration and our government will have a very difficult time proving his corpse is the real McCoy. There will always be some Iraqis who will never believe out of fear, hatred or intense loyalty that the man they see, dead or alive, is the real Saddam Hussein. Our government will have a much better chance of bringing stability to a country that has been torn apart by a ruthless regime and a devastating war and bringing our troops back home if the real Saddam is brought to justice as a live human being, not a dead martyr. The last thing the Bush Administration or America needs is to turn this whole bloody mess into a jihad or a holy was. It hasnt become one as yet, but with the death of Saddam, I fear a holy war could become a reality. ------------ About the author: Bobbie Hart ONeill is a retired print media journalist, CSU-Sacramento, 74, with 40 years experience in the field.
