Opening Your Pool
Apr 23, 2004

It's that time of year again. The time of year when those of us with a swimming pool start thinking about opening our pools for the Summer. I was thinking of what to write about, and it hit me, why not write about what I know. I hope this article will help some of our readers, who forget, from year to year, what to do.

First of all, you must remove the Winter cover. Some of you may have a solid cover, which may need to be drained, and others may have a safety cover. So the first step is to remove the cover.

Next, fill the pool to it's proper level, about half way up the skimmer. Remove all the plugs, and gizzmos that were installed for the winter. Make sure you remove all the plugs, or the system will not operate properly.

Install the filter system. Make sure all the connections are tight and there are no cracks in the piping. Prime your pump with water, and turn it on. If you have a DE filter, it is now time to feed the proper amount of DE into the skimmer. If you have a sand filter, make sure you have clean sand in it. And if you have a cartridge filter, make sure the cartridge is in good shape, or new.

Now it's time to shock your pool. Use a good Di-Chlor shock or something compatible. I use Di-Chlor, it suits my needs very well, and it's an exceptional product for the money. Next, you should introduce chlorine to the pool. I use 3" slow tabs, but you can use any type sanitizer you desire. Don't be fooled by price. In the pool business, cheaper is never better.

What I suggest next is to bring your pool water to a dealer for a complete water test. Make sure they check the water for:
Free Chlorine
Total Chlorine
Combined Chlorine
Ph
Alkalinity
Calcium
Stabilizer
Metals

The more you keep you pool in balance, the cheaper it will cost to maintain it throughout the Summer. I hope this little article will help some of our readers, and if you like it, and it was helpful, let me know. Have a safe and happy Summer season.
