Can I Help You?
Dec 17, 2004

As I sit here and type away on the coldest day in New England in forty-seven years, I say to myself: "What am I nuts? Go to Florida and relax" But, I won't. However harsh the weather, I stay. Why? Because this is my home, and I love it. Nothing beats Winter in New England, and no one beats New England--"Patriots" in the winter. I had to get that in. "Go Pats"

OK, back to my random thoughts. We are a hearty bunch here in the "Arctic", I mean New England. Where else can you see us fools running around with no coats on. Well not all of us, I saw a thirteen year old boy on the news leaving school, holding the coat his parents bought him in his hand, because the t-shirt he was wearing was "cool" and wanted to show it off. Our future elected officials, GOD help us. OK, so that was an extreme example.

Here's one for you. We make it a point, well, a rule to have all of our equipment working in all weather conditions, so we are constantly working on them, even when severe weather is not predicted. We are also a bunch of nice guys, and if a neighbor or friend needs help, we are there. Well, if only the opposite was true. On one of the coldest days last week, I awoke to find my car was dead. OOPS! I worried about the trucks and forgot to check my car. OK, it was stupidity on my part, so I will suffer a bit. Boy, was I right. These neighbors of mine, which me and my guys have helped numerous times, walked by me on their way to work, without as much as a "Hey Artie, do you need anything?" Nothing, not a peep. As I stood there installing a new battery in thirty-below windchill, I said to myself, "I'll remember everyone who walked by and didn't offer me a hand" I was hurt. And very cold.

If I've learned one thing about living my whole life in Massachusetts is that most people, not everyone, will not lend you a hand in extreme heat or extreme cold, no matter what. This is just my opinion.

Well since last week when this happened, we were back at it, helping out the neighbors again, I guess the old saying is true, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" I find it rewarding helping people, and I'll probably continue to do it. Am I a sucker? Maybe. I won't be helping anyone on January 18th, I'm going to watch my Patriots win, and then, well, if you need me, just call...............
