Fan Mail? Ouch!!
Dec 25, 2003

"What are you doing?" That's the question I've been asked by readers and friends alike. "What is all the fluff about?" They are talking about my articles on UK.com, as I like to call Useless-Knowledge.com. The reason? People like fluff.

Don't get me wrong, I'm damn serious when it comes to serious journalism. This is not my full time job, so I'll just leave that end of the business to the professionals. And the people who actually like what I write about are my friends that are in this business full time. Well I'm confused. This is what I will say on my behalf. Keep going and stop worrying what people think.

First of all, turn on your local news and tell me the last time you were not depressed after the newscast. Violence, death, illness, shootings, accidents, etc... and that is before the first commercial. News is very important to me, just ask anyone who knows me. Too many times to mention I've been on ride alongs with friends, who are reporters and photographers, and I have pages and pages of notes that I can write about, but choose not to. After seeing it first hand, being in the news business is not a glamorous life. As far as I can see, these people deserve all the credit they get. Hats off to all the men and women that keep us informed everyday.

As for me, I will continue, for now, to write the stories I feel will make you laugh, think, cry, and hopefully enjoy, just a liitle. We have some incredible talent here at UK.com and I'm proud to be associated with everyone here. One of my journalist friends once told me, "If you want to be a good writer, learn to get all the facts straight, and don't be afraid to expose the truth. And the most important thing is to keep a good sense of humor. Don't be afraid to make fun of yourself." He's right, if you can't make fun of yourself, don't make fun of anyone else.

I love writing, I always have. I've been writing different things for over twenty-five years. Nothing real special, Church newsletters, work related aricles, a few newspaper editorials, and editing all of our web sites. Would I ever want to do this for a living? Sure, but I don't think people are knocking down my door looking for me. So for now, I'll just type away on my little computer and hope.

If you're going to send me any more emails about the subjects I write about, and how I write them, and suggestions of what I can do with them, I say go for it. As my friend Robert, who does this stuff for money, and good money may I say, "Fan mail, any type of fan mail, bad or good, is a good thing" Bring on the mail, I'm ready for it, and thanks for reading.
