Dec 3, 2003 One of the most important Holiday's of the Christian calendar is almost upon us. Yes, I'm talking about Christmas. The time of the year when everyone is out to find that perfect gift. Spending beyond one's means is considered part of the Christmas Holiday. My family is no exception, they feel this way as well, but I have a problem with that. What about the families that can't. I have talked to at least fifteen family's that have been affected by layoffs or a business that has been closed. Two women in particular caught my attention though. The first is an older woman, who has worked hard her whole life, lost her job at the beginning of November. She has supported herself and her two children since her Husband left her twenty years ago. She has always been a hard worker, and now, she hasn't even been able to find another job. It could be the economy, but she thinks it could be her age. Either way she has told me that this will be a very depressing Christmas. You see, she has, as I told you, two children. They are all grown up and out of the house, but, what she is most depressed about is the fact that she also has five grandchildren. She likes to spoil them, but this Christmas, she will not be able to do that, and that makes her the most sad. Another person I interviewed was a young woman in her mid thirties. She also was a hard working girl who lost her job of fifteen years. She bought her own house, a new car, and was also able to save some money in the bank. She has since found a new job, but she is only taking home half of what she is used to, and that makes her uncomfortable. For you see, she comes from a pretty well off family which has never helped her out in any way. She has told her family that she has lost her job, and all they said was, and I quote "Well, you'll just have to find something else" That quote didn't bother her as much as the phone calls and letters she has received with what everyone in her family wants for Christmas. She has told them that "The money is just not there this year" but it just doesn't seem to matter to them. Those are just two stories out of the many that I have heard. I don't tend to give advice to anyone, but to these two women and the countless other people I have spoken with, I say this.......... Christmas is a time for love, family, and just being together, and if gifts are the only reason friends and family want you, then there is something wrong. I've said this before and I'll say it again, thank GOD for my family and friends. Please help someone needy this Holiday season, because you never know when that person may be you. Merry Christmas |
