May 18, 2003 The alarm went off at six thirty am. I crawled out of bed, had a cigarette and a cup of coffee. What a nice late summer morning, I thought. The birds were singing, the sun was shining, it was perfect. I checked my email, had another cup of coffee, and did some cleaning up. I jumped in the shower around eight thirty. When I got out, on the television was a breaking news story of a large building on fire. It was a strange site. I was thinking to myself, "I'm glad I'm not in there" I finished getting dressed, and headed out. On the way to work, I tuned into the all news station. They reported yet another building was on fire in the same city. Now, I thought this is a little weird, but I continued on my way without a second thought. When I arrived at the office, no one had heard about the fires, and really didn't care about a building fire, so far away. I turned the television on, and there it was, every news outlet had these fires live. As we watched, the anchor of the newscast reported yet another fire, this time in another state. I said to my Father, who rarely stays in the office, but stayed with me that day for some reason, "This is going to be a busy news day" Boy was I right. About an hour later, another breaking news story was crossing the wire. This time, of a possible plane crash. No one could confirm this, but there was a report of a plane missing. As the morning passed, and some very graphic images came on my television sets, I knew this was no ordinary day, it was September 11th, 2001 I hear people, older than me, talking about; "Do you remember where you were when JFK was shot?" Now I know what they meant. I remember 9/11 as if it were yesterday, and I will never forget it. For the next several hours I was receiving calls and emails from friends and relatives, just wanting to say hello and to see if I was alright. I found that confusing, knowing I was no where near any type of danger. I guess they just wanted to hear my voice, and know I was OK. It was a day filled with horror, and yet, a day filled with love. I have never felt closer to my family and friends as I did that horrible day. As the day came to a close, I locked up and headed
home. When I arrived home, something was different. You see, we live near the
airport, and we are used to planes flying overhead every ninety seconds, and on
that night, there was silence. The only sound we heard that night were the Air
Force jets flying patrols up and down the coast. As day turned to night, I knew
that day, our World had changed forever. Will I ever forget that day? Probably
not. And neither should anyone else. I thank GOD everyday for what I have and
what I had. And I Pray, another 9/11 will never happen again.
