A Day By The Pool
May 5, 2003

Oh, what a beautiful Spring day. The weather man said that Summer is just around the corner. I think I'll get the swimming pool ready for the season. This will be a breeze. I'm a pool guy, I'll be done in an hour or so.

I begin by making myself a cup of coffee, Now I'll go out and make an assessment of my situation. There is two feet of water on the cover, where did that come from? I didn't see that in January. Oh welI, I'll have to pump the cover. No big deal. Where is my pump? I saw it in October.

Thank God, I found the pump. What the...who cut the cord? Oh that's right, I needed it for the Christmas lights. I'll just go to the shop, one of the trucks has a pump.

An hour later, the pump is on the cover doing it's job, and boy do I need another cup of coffee. Two hours later, the cover is dry. Didn't I say this would take an hour? Well, I didn't foresee this slight delay. No problem, I'll be done in an hour.

Wow! This cover is heavy, I need some help. I'll call the neighbors. They use the pool more than I do, they'll be glad to help. An hour later, I'm still trying to find help. Where is everyone? When it's ninety-five degrees and humid, they are always here. Maybe they aren't back from Church yet, I'll wait. Another hour goes by, still no one. The NASCAR race is on in a couple of hours, I still have time.

Well, I couldn't wait any longer, I tried pulling the cover off alone. Much to my surprise, all the water wasn't off the cover. I wished I had seen that before the cover slipped from my hands, and is now sitting comfortably at the bottom of my pool. Well, I'll wait till Monday, if they are not too busy, I'll ask my guys to come over and pull it out. But knowing how busy we get every year, hopefully I'll get it open by July 4th.

If the pool isn't open by Memorial Day, my neighbors will be upset with me. Oh yes, the same ones that avoided me during the opening will hold me responsible for ruining the Holiday for them. And yes, so will my family. We have to be neighborly, can't have anyone mad at us. Give me a break. I'm going in to watch the race. The heck with the pool, there will be other days. Hopefully not with the same results.
