May 20, 2004 Shrek 2, a major picture that opened up yesterday, was a wonderful movie to take my ten year old. This movie was very funny but could have pushed the jokes even further. Not to give away much of the movie, but I really would have liked to know what did take Prince Charming so long to get to Fiona? Maybe, he had an extended bacholor party? Or was he kidnapped by frothing rabid elves with a taste for good looking men? The company Dream Works founded by Steven Spielberg, Jeffery Katzenberg and David Geffen has found a market that will give Disney a run for box office profits; animation and computer animation. Dream Works was founded in 1994, according to the company web site, www.dreamworks.com, with the purpose of creating an artist friendly enviorment. I think the company has met its goal with the many computer animated movies starting with the motion picture Antz. Done with the history lesson now back to the movie I saw last night, Shrek 2. The movie has appeal to both an adult audiences and children. Adults, like myself, might find it appealing that this is a movie that lets the movie couple not be the Barbie and Ken ideal couple but be just what they are ogres. For children there is an appeal with the new charater that was introduced Puss in Boots, he stands before a battle looking cute and huggable. Shrek is a lovable ogre just trying to make his way in the world. Like many of us he looks at situations and tries within the limitations of his charater to solve his problems. This leads to the audience identifying with Shrek; cheering when he is triumphant and moaning in pain when he is in pain. This kind of good charater development has been lacking in motion pictures. Most of the pictures I have seen have gone down the road of great special effects with no real development in the story, not so with Shrek. Shrek is a good movie. If you are a fan of the first movie please go, but expect some of the jokes to feel like the company cut some scenes or just did not push the joke to the furthest possibilty. That is my complaint but humor is subjective. I love the animation and I hope Dream Works next picture, that is computer animated, will have the same quality as Shrek. ------------ About the author: Being a full time writer is the hardest job that I have tried.
