Sept 23, 2003 I think I can speak for a growing number of Americans as polling data clearly shows, that Iraq, the war on terror, and the Bush administration in general is getting a little annoying. The game seems to be to instill fear in the population, and then to promulgate the notion that only the republicans can save and protect us from the evil boogieman. And then pray to God that everyone swallows all of it hook, line, and sinker. I'm pleased to report that many, many Americans are now in the process of spitting out the bait. - We are presented with a new audio-tape of Saddam or Bin Laden every now and then (the boogiemen), along with the raising and lowering of the color-code terror alert system. Raised and lowered, raised and lowered (the attempt to instill and maintain fear). And then of course, the John Wayne rhetoric from the President himself---"Bring 'em on." (C'mon people, how can you not re-elect John Wayne in the middle of a WAR, only John Wayne can save us). - Now we have the preposterous spectacle of the Bush gang at the United Nations, sniffing around and kissing up, trying to get assistance in Iraq. This just a few months after Bush and the republican party declared the UN irrelevant. It's embarrassing for America..... There is, however, at least one positive aspect to this flip-flop--- The republican party seems to be acknowledging, finally, that it is not very productive to have EVERYONE hating our guts, except for Israel. - It seems pretty obvious, and this is the most despicable thing, that the threat to the average American from terror is almost non-existent now. But we cannot be told this. Then the game is up. Instead, we must be convinced that another 9-11 is just around the corner at all times for the rest of eternity. The funniest thing is that it will probably turn out that Bush will end up wishing he listened to the Hollywood crowd. Hussein was contained and impotent at the time we attacked, and now we have a financial and bloody mess staring at us face to face for the next 5 or 10 years after the unnecessary attack. And whenever we pack up and leave the strong likelihood that another tyrant will quickly rise to power, as is the norm in Arab and Muslim politics. Maybe I'm not giving the Bush adminstration enough credit here. Maybe the plan is to eventually have a pro-American brutal dictator in Iraq, like we installed and supported in South and Central America for so long. So much for freedom, huh? ------------ Email Gerald Paul Hench: ghench@grwinc.com Comment on this column in the forum. Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
