Cub Fans Need To Get A Life!
Oct 16, 2003

Perhaps the Chicago Cubs don't deserve to get a break as far as shattering the curse of mediocrity that has haunted them for nearly 60 years. One thing is for certain, the Cub's fans certainly don't deserve to experience the euphoria of seeing their team win a national championship. Such a privilege should be reserved for those with a sense of decorum and good sportsmanship. The debacle of game 6 in Chicago illustrates the sad state of professional sports today.

First of all, Steve Bartman, the fan who "prevented" Moises Alou from catching a foul ball on the fly, is a scapegoat for a team that just couldn't close it out. Is he responsible for the subsequent errors and missteps by the Cubs that allowed the Marlins to pull ahead late in the game and take it by 5 runs? Is he also responsible for their loss to the Marlins in game 7? I think not. But it is much easier for team members to blame their malaise on a hapless fan, who happened to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time, than it is to accept responsiblity themselves. And it is far more comforting for the fans to chastise one of their own rather than admonish their multionnaire heros who are paid to perform under pressure and recover from minor setbacks.

For the Cub fans out there, please take note: IT'S JUST A GAME! As bitter a pill as this may be for some of you to swallow, baseball is nothing more than a game, an entertaining diversion, not a life or death matter.

If more fans paid attention to the important matters in their lives and worried less about the tribulations of professional sports teams, the world we be a better place...and professional sports would be a helluva lot more fun to watch.
