All those who were rude and crude raise your hand. I see that all the candidates have raised their hands. Good for you. I applaud your new honesty.

And the winner is -- Mr. Winner, promise me right now that you didnt run on ego alone? And you runner-ups? If you get flowers and a crown, promise me youll do your best to negotiate and compromise?

There! Thats done. Now we can all bathe in the new optimism of a beginning. For a little while anyway.

What is it about half-truths and ambiguous announcements that cause our high hopes to ebb? Can we be more forgiving this time? Or will we look in askance at California after the 100-day honeymoon of the new leader of that populous and fiscal nation/state? According to television data more Hispanics voted against the recall of Davis. Will that group feel impatience? Or will everyone?

Most importantly of all, we must pay careful attention because by the end of the week, therell be a new story, a new hype, and new cause celebri for the media. Could it now be the presumed health of Arafat? Or is there a kernel not popped over Kobe? Is it time for cayenne pepper on the popcorn presidential wannabes?

My popcorn is scorched by the television news. I intend to spend time reading a book with pages and words not changed by updates and newsbreaks. Excuse me while I put Orville in the microwave before it puts out the cat.
