The Era of Big Government
Nov 25, 2003

Somewhere along the way conservatives got the shaft, again. The idea of government growing too large for the populous to support has fallen on deaf ears but this time it is not the Democrat party. It is the Republican party as well.

A new and large entitlement is about to clear the senate. That is the prescription drug bill for seniors. I am not opposed to seniors having their much-needed medicines but I am opposed to creating a huge deficit to fund this. As if the defense spending bill and the money to fight AIDS in Africa wasnt enough, we are now strapped with this huge burden.

It was crucial that we build up our military and after the ravaging of the Clinton years. Our military needed a huge amount of money to bring it into the 21st Century. Especially in view of 9/11 and the war in Iraq. The problem is that this is where the spending should have stopped.

The AIDS in Africa bill was purely a political move to reach out the African-American voters. But like with any liberal Democrat group it didnt work. Liberals of all ethnicities have an inborn hatred of all things conservatives. The liberals have been lied to so much that they think conservatives live to starve children and pollute the environment. So anything President Bush does is met with contempt.

Now we are on the verge of the passage of a huge spending bill for seniors. Oddly the AARP, long time supporters of the Democrat party, are supporting the Republicans bill. The Democrats are complaining that it doesnt do enough. But then they wouldnt be Democrats if it didnt involve more spending and/or more taxes.

Should we have a prescription drug plan for seniors? That depends on which senior you are talking about. Sure there are many who cannot afford their drugs and to them I would say they need help. But there are many others that have saved a decent retirement and still others that retired wealthy. Still there are many seniors that require none or very little medication because of their health. So painting such a broad stoke by saying our seniors need free medicine is not accurate. Some could benefit greatly by it but many others have no need of free prescriptions.

I am not sure what an equitable solution would be or even if there is one. But I am sure of one thing. Running up a huge deficit to help seniors is only going to hurt the future generations that will have pay off those deficits. The best solution is if we all got more involved with our parents, grandparents or great grandparents. If we make an effort to help our own, those that have helped us, then we wont need the government. Lack of government inference is what this country was founded on.
