Nov 25, 2003 I recently heard a politician say that even though he was disappointed with how the postwar effort of the U.S. in Iraq was going and even though they never found any weapons of mass destruction, that the world is a better place without Sadam Hussein in power. Is it really? If that's to be the justification for a war that should have never happened then let's just see how much better the world is now that Sadam is gone. First of all we have the Iraqi people, more than half of which, don't want the U.S. there and never did, living in total chaos and disarray. There's no government, no leader, a good portion of their country is in ruins, and they're barely getting by on a daily basis without being killed by a bomb or stray bullet in places without power, food or safe shelter. At least they're free of the reign of terror so that they can enjoy the all the trappings they now have as a country not under tyrannical rule. That's better isn't it? Then we have the U.S. troops. Now on a daily basis we have soldiers being killed by the same people we just "freed." More than we did during this war and the previous Gulf War. We have no support from other countries except England and most people stateside, while they appreciate what the troops are doing don't really think they should be there. And of course we never really hear about everything going on over there so we'll never really know, kind of like Vietnam. But at least the troops believe they have saved a country and it's people from a terrible man, even if they're dying unnecessarily. That's better right? And let's not forget the other part of this scenario. The war on terrorism. Sadam may have not had any WMDs but he's clearly linked to terrorist groups and so this war could certainly help in our fight against terrorists looking to bring the great power of America down. So I guess the places they're blowing up now are different because apparently those bombers are not the terrorists we're trying to get rid of. At least they're not bombing us right. Only other folks. That's much better. So you see the world is a better place. A devastated country, soldiers dying and terrorists running rampant bombing synagogues and official buildings. Thank goodness we invaded Iraq to change the world. ------------ Email Shawn Deena: darklyeden@earthlink.net Comment on this column in the forum. Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
