Nov 2, 2003 "Revs" Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson have never been ones to duck the media spotlight. These self-promoting champions of minority social causes have never held back with their sermonic drubbing of establishment "abuses" while wrapping themselves in the holy cloth. However, at a time when God and Christians are under siege from the left, the Twin Revs have remained uncharacteristically quiet. Just in case the Twin Revs haven't heard, God has been driven from the classroom and the courthouse and Christians have been vilified by "defenders of the First Amendment" in a way that would make the most hard-core Ayatollah smile. Yet the Twin Revs have yet to take up this cause. I am not a religious man myself and would personally never aspire to take on the moniker "Reverend". In addition, I am a strong proponent of the separation of church and state. But I have been appalled by these blatantly vicious attacks. After all, it doesn't take one of strong faith to realize that our country was built upon Christian morals. Therefore, I have never felt that a political reference to God, such as in "one nation under God", was an attempt by the "Radical Religious Right" to impose religious beliefs upon me, as it is in most Islamic countries. So why am I so concerned about this when the Twin Revs apparently are not? Let's take a look at the issue of racial equality. The Twin Revs have certainly been very outspoken in this area. Yet, curiously, they have not been vociferous critics of the Senate's blocking of highly qualified minority candidates to the U.S. District Court of Appeals. Both justices Migel Estrada and Janice Rogers Brown are examples of highly-qualified minority candidates who rose from humble beginnings to the pinnacle of their careers. Yet despite their outstanding credentials, they are being politically blocked from reaching even greater heights. Discriminatory? Indeed. And I am outraged. But the Twin Revs, defenders of minority rights, apparently are not too concerned. I feel that Reverends should be purveyors of truth...so let's be truthful. The Twin Revs could care less about God, Christianity or the rights of minorities. They care only about one thing: political power. For the Twin Revs, God and Christianity is only important when it serves their purpose: a vehicle to add false credibility to their bogus careers. And neither Rev cares much about equality for minorities either. In fact, the worst nightmare for these peddlers of hate is true racial equality. If this scenario were ever take hold, and we to live in a society free of racial tension, the Twin Revs would be out of business. And that would be a good thing. ------------ Email Tom Albano: tomalbano@optonline.net Comment on this column in the forum. Tell a friend about this site! ------------ |
