June 16, 2003 The European Union, in cahoots with radical environmentalists like Greenpeace, continue with their irrational ban on imported food from the U.S. that has been genetically modified. This despite the fact that every scientific study done on the subject has proven that there is no discernible danger from g.m. foods, and the fact that we in the U.S. have been eating said foods for over a decade with no ill effects. What makes this more than a simple trade dispute between EU farmers, who are less productive and therefore need special protection from competition, and the U.S. is the fact that the ban has led to the spectacle of starving nations rejecting food aid from the U.S., not only because of the ban but because of false propaganda being spread by the greens and the Euros regarding the food. They tell the people in African countries that the food is 'poisoned' and 'contaminated'. These are the words they use in place of 'genetically modified'. No wonder the people of these countries are often too afraid to take the food and would rather slowly starve to death. Have you ever seen someone starving to death? It's just about the most awful way to die imaginable. You can't overstate this problem. There is not ONE SINGLE IOTA OF EVIDENCE that these foods are in the least bit dangerous, and the EU admits that. So the question becomes, are they doing this out of genuine (if irrational) fear, or are they doing it simply to stick it to the U.S. (wouldn't be the first time) and protect their own farmers from competition? Keep in mind while pondering that one, the fact that they admit that there is no evidence to suggest these foods are anything but nutritious. Makes you think, doesn't it? We in America have it in our power to substantially reduce human suffering and starvation throughout the developing world. But if 70% of American food is genetically modified to some degree, and if more than half the world's stock of food aid comes from America, well, you do the math. That's a lot of food that's not getting into the stomachs of the people who need it so desperately, and it is entirely the fault of the European Union and radical environmentalists. I bet if it was a colony of Spotted Owls who were starving the greens would demand that we feed them as much genetically modified food as they required. ------------ Email James Imbrogno: skifreak26@hotmail.com Comment on this column in the forum. ------------ |
