Jeff Davis Riley

Athletes, The Best of The Best...
June 10, 2003

Driving down Interstate 35 headed for the Dallas Ft. Worth International Airport with the radio on listening to the local ESPN network. The local musers challenged their listeners to name the all time best athletes. Naturally, names like Jim Thorpe, Herschel Walker, Doak Walker and Bob Lilly came up. These musers, the hosts of the show asked the listening audience to get creative and looking outside the box, bring some real talent to the list. Tiger Woods came up, so did Mark Spitz and Cassius Clay and Bob Alcinder. Each time an athlete on the fray came up the hosts of the show praised the caller for thinking on their toes.

Unable to stand it any longer, I called in at was put on hold. Finally without talking to a producer or screener I was 'On The Air' "Hey Jeff who's your all time favorite athlete?"

"That would be Gene Kelly!" I said.

"Who?"

"Gene Kelly!" I said again.

"Gene Kelly, who is that? We're talking about professionals here." The DJ said.

Before I could explain, the DJ hung up and went to the next caller. Dialing the phone, I tried to get back to these musers, no way. I got madder and madder when to my suprise, a local professional football player called in to cast his vote for the best of the best. His vote? Gene Kelly and he explained who is was without interruption.

Do you know who Gene Kelly was?

Hint, start with the movie On The Town and follow it with an American in Paris. You will have seen one of the all time great athletes and a regular Joe!
