May 26, 2003 When you think about our world today, do you ever ask, how in the world did we get here? Why are we in the mess we are in right now? Well, I'll tell you that it is because of our leaders and their crazy acts. Yes, some of these 'crazy acts' can be good, but unfortunately that is highly unlikely. 'What are some things they have done?' you might ask. Well I sure hope they have done a lot. They sure get paid a lot more than most people, including the teachers, actually maybe more like 4 or so teachers, depending where you live. Most recently, the tax cut is what Congress passed, by a slim margin, and the President supported, although it is not enough, in his opinion. My question: Is the tax cut really good? Simple answer: NO! All this money, the hundred of billions is going to the rich. We all know that, and even if it didn't, is it really going to help people at all?!? I don't think so. Well some might say that since the money is going to the rich, won't that mean that they can hire more people with more money? Possibly, but what about the government employees that are going to get cut and the people that will be affected when they find out their program has been cut in half! That will affect the many more people than the few rich people who will even use their tax cut refund to help anyone other than THEMSELVES. Our government is in debt, the biggest ever, and yet we find it smart to give the money which could help our government, what keeps our country together, to the richest of the rich! On a different issue, let's think of our environment. The environment is very key to our living, as we could not do without trees or grass or animals or anything of that sort. Many people in Congress, and also the President, want to DRILL, or in other words DESTROY, a refuge because we want to give the Hummers and gas sucking SUVs a couple extra miles. Thank goodness not all our leaders are THAT crazy. And to add to this chaos, the Environmental Protecion Agency Administrator Christie Whitman has RESIGNED. 'Why?' you may ask. Because of President Bush. Because he has disagreed with the Chief of the EPA on almost every issue. You would think the Chief of the EPA would know just a little bit more about what is best for our environment, wouldn't you? About three years ago, just a few days after Chieft Whitman said that reducing carbon dioxide emissions was progressing, Bush broke that and let those rules fly. In March of 2002 another EPA head official, Regulatory Enforcement Chief Eric Schaeffer resigned again because of Bush saying that the White House was "determined to weaken the rules". These rules are just the ones that the EPA tries to enforce! Well if this doesn't easily say how crazy our leaders are, I do not know what will. I just hope we can all realize this before it is too late. ------------ About the author: Matthew is a high school student who loves politics and life.
