Billboards?
Mar 31, 2004

Have you ever woke up one beautiful morning to take a family trip down one of the many American roads to some quiet or not so quiet destination with your children? I have many times. I wanted to see the mountains, plains, deserts and coast lands this country has in abundance. Drive down an interstate, freeway or toll raod and what do you see instead, billboards. Lots of billboards advertising for many different destinations along the road; such as, Days Inn 55 miles or my favorite the many Mcdonald's signs that make the children in the back seat scream that they are hungry even though you had fed them breakfast.

There is a great law that was past over sixteen years ago in the state of Alaska, it banned billboards along the few highways Alaska has for a family to drive. The law made sure the side of the road would not be cluttered up by large signs. Alaskan's value the landscape and the beauty of what they see when they are driving.

Billborads are hard to read and a driver should not be distracted from driving by reading anyway. I have read that some states have banned cell phones because the phones are a distraction to drivers, so why not make reading billboards illegal too. How do you drive and read all the words, especially in some places where you can drive 70 miles per hour or faster. Plus, the pictures on some leave the imagination wanting; such as, along high way 80 from Sacramento to San Fracisco the are signs of a neon frog when you are getting closer to Davis. Why a neon frog? Because? Well, I couldn't read the sign I was driving the speed limit.

Not having billboards would not only improve the looks of the highways but would improve the looks of our cities. Billboards are ugly, they make the buildings look ugly. It saddens me when I enter a city, like San Francisco or Atlanta, and see huge signs covering up a building that an architect spent time drawing up plans for to make a beautiful skyline.

There is no sence any more in my opinion in trying to advertise along the roads or on big buildings. The billboards make the places look cluttered and ugly. The places where there should be advertising are already in place: television, internet, magazines, etc. Why not take the signs down?
