Mar 30, 2004 The world of the working class. Years ago, I envisioned a champion of the people. This champion would come and “lay down the law” enabling the masses to break free from their bondage. Those who were slaves to the system, could break from their shackles through a free, accessible and empowering educational system. They would be liberated. What I had failed to realize, was the lack of motivation most have to break free. They are comfortable in their subservience to the system. They don’t care about changing their station in life or the hardships of future generations because of their apathy. They worry about the here and now. I can’t fault anyone for going along with generations of mind-numbing programs. They’re doing what they’re meant to do. It’s easier that way. Ignorance is bliss. “I live at the zoo” she says. Referring to her home, there’s is just a hint of bitterness creeping it’s way into her speech. There are four children and a husband at home and she doesn’t have time to read the newspaper. She works fifty hours a week, returns home, cleans, chauffers, cooks, plays teacher, does the laundry and is always concerned about someone else’s needs. She’s Superwoman, I think. Or really stupid. Maybe a masochist. She was told as a young woman, this is what was expected of her. Grow up and become a member of your community by sacrificing everything you are. Forget who you are. Become subservient, that’s your station in life. It’s never said in those words. It’s a subtle message running through the culture; but that’s what is expected. She’s doing her part--playing the role she’s supposed to be playing. It was written just for her. She doesn’t have time to read the newspaper. Full of angst, I joined groups, voted, read, signed petitions, wrote, spoke and observed. The state of humanity doesn’t change. The more obvious injustices against our fellow humans are pushed into the recesses by the laws we pass. Child labor. Does this mean, it doesn’t happen? Of course not. It happens-- daily. Let’s not look at that. It’s unpleasant. It’s uncomfortable. We have to live here, why do we want to focus on the negative? Let’s go see a movie. One of those uplifting pieces that make us feel really good about ourselves and our lives and how great we’re doing compared to those who live in Somalia. Let’s ignore it all, because it’s easier that way. Afterall, we do have to make a living. This is the here and now. The reality of existence. Movies, soda, popcorn and tomorrow we’ll return to our day job. It’s a good life. What is the nature of the beast I’m railing about? The motivating factors are fear and reward. The basic intention is survival and propagation. It’s a culture of deception. Stop. What just happened here? There is a sea of ideas floating around on the internet. Some good, some bad. A few clicks here, tapping of the keys and voila! I have your attention. I can feed you anything; and more than likely you’re willing to swallow it. Just like every other lie that’s fed to you. Look around. Observe. Read. Above all, read. It doesn’t matter what. Just read. Educate yourself, because at some point you really will need it. Don’t listen to me because I have my own agenda. Come back to the here and now. Laugh. Love. Take care of your family. Educate yourself and quit listening to the hype. Everyone has an agenda and that’s what the hype is about. They want you to listen to theirs. The intention is to get you to parrot the propaganda. You do. Come back to the here and now. Stop. Think. ------------ Email Carla R.
