Critics Cut Up New Version of Chainsaw Massacre
Mar 24, 2004

Texas Chain Saw massacre was originally released in 1974, directed by Tom Hooper; the film was loosely based on the real-life crimes of Ed Gein, which also inspired Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho." If you haven’t seen the original it is about a group of kids who jump in a van and go two tracking in a rural area of Texas, they encounter an old farmhouse, which turns out to be the home of a family of mass murderers. They are former butchers and now have turned on humans; they decorate their home with human bones and skin. The teens are looking for somewhere to stay, the farmhouse, which seems to be abandoned looks like a good spot for a night of fun. Ignoring the no trespassing signs and all around scary look of the farm the teens go in and are in for the night of their lives or Deaths.

The movie contains many characters but perhaps the most famous and talked about is leather face, he is the one who goes on the brutal killing spree and kills all of the travelers that come to his farm. Why leather face right? Well the name pretty much explains itself. He has a mask made of human skin that he has collected from the travelers he has killed; the mask is not removable because it is sewn to his face. The dried out skin on his face appears to be leather.

Tobe Hooper, Tom Hooper’s father, directed the original movie. The sick minded yet intelligent directors have the idea that obviously blood and gore appeals to us the moviegoers.

“The music is the scary part not the blood,” said junior Matthew Meindertsma. The movie featured songs by Roger Bartlett & Friends, Timberline Rose, Arkey Blue and Los Cyclones.

This movie that is often imitated has now been remade but nothing can ever be as good as the original no matter what the case.

Critics at rottentomatoes.com give just released “Texas Chain Saw Massacre” 5 out of 10 on its redone box office debut.

The Miami Herald has called the movie humorless and resoundingly artificial. Critic Doctor Peter Sobczynski called “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” utter boredom after the first fifteen minutes. I have too admit that I struggled to hold my popcorn in on some parts; Hooper just went way too far. Guts and gore aren’t scary, the original is scary and not at all artificial in 1974 the movie was made on a very low budget and no one thought that the movie would go this big. The new version follows the same plot as the original, kids in a van encounter leather face, and they are brutally murdered. There is just something different about this one, I mean seeing Jessica Biel in a wet t-shirt could possibly make a good movie but it doesn’t do the movie justice. Jessica Biel is not the only one in this movie also starring Jonathan Tucker, Eric Belfour, Erica Leerhsen, Mike Vogel, Lauren German, and R. Lee Ermey.

I think that Jeff Westhoff of the North West Herald says it best “The original movie has been ripped off so many times over 29 years that a genuine remake comes off as a copy of the copies.”
